How She's in the Game
On the court, Sylvia Fowles battles for points and rebounds, but off the court, she’s committed to the battle against epilepsy. After her young nephew was diagnosed with the disease, Sylvia partnered with CURE, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy, in hopes of and raising funds and public awareness. Thanks to Sylvia’s involvement, the Chicago Sky initiated a special ticket program in which a portion of the proceeds for a home game was donated to CURE. After the game, Sylvia hosted a meet-and-greet with some of her teammates and young epilepsy patients. In the summer of 2010, she received the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award, which allowed her to direct a $5,000 WNBA donation to CURE. To further lend her support to the cause, Sylvia has purchased CURE themed wristbands to distribute to CURE members, friends, and fellow supporters. “I am grateful that I am in a position to make a difference for those who struggle with epilepsy,” Fowles says, “I look forward to continuing to raise awareness and funding to find a cure for this devastating disease, and I encourage others to lend a helping hand.”
About Sylvia Fowles
Drafted 2nd overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2008 draft, Sylvia Fowles is quickly making a name for herself as one of the WNBA’s elite centers. She was selected to the 2009 and 2010 WNBA All Star rosters and became the third player ever to dunk during live action at the 2009 All Star Game. She was named game MVP for leading Team USA to victory in the 2010 all-star exhibition WNBA vs. USA Basketball: Stars at the Sun. Following the 2010 season Fowles was named to the All-WNBA and WNBA All-Defensive first teams. Fowles played her college ball at Louisiana State University, where she was 2008 SEC Player of the Year, and helped lead her team to three consecutive Final Four appearances.
