How He's in the Game
For the past six years, Michael Young and his wife, Cristina, have served in active roles with Wipe Out Kids' Cancer (WOKC). They've hosted gatherings of WOKC ambassadors and children selected by the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Young has also served as the honorary chair for the WOKC annual golf tournament for three years. In 2005, the Youngs furnished the outpatient therapy room at Children’s Medical Center, providing much needed equipment.
In 2006, they began the Young Heroes Program, selecting scholarship essays from students planning to attend college after overcoming the obstacle of cancer in their lives. The last two years, they have selected ten outstanding students, giving four a $2,500 college scholarship and the remaining six a $1,000 college scholarship, laptop and printer. This year, 21 will receive the $1,000 college scholarship, laptop and printer.
Young also actively participates in the Major League Players Association Buses for Baseball and Action Team Programs, bringing underprivileged youth to a Rangers game to meet with players. He gave 300 coats to the Trinity River Mission and is contributing $10,000 to provide uniforms for the Jr. RBI and RBI programs this summer.
The Texas Rangers recognized Young with the Jim Sundberg Community Award in 2007.
