Chapter 510 Launches Two Student Written Books
Our mission is to disrupt the cycle of poverty and encourage innovation by seed funding start-up nonprofits in the Bay Area, allows us to have a chance to work with some incredible organizations. Speaking of which, let me introduce you to one of our awesome grantees, Janet from Chapter 510. Chapter 510 & the Department of Make Believe is a Oakland youth writing center that provides free in-school tutoring, creative writing workshops and publishing opportunities for K-12 students in Oakland. Here is my interview with Janet, the Founder & CEO.
What is going on in 2018 for Chapter 510?
Two intensive writing camps happening this spring and both are free!
For high school students, we are hosting a queer teen writing workshop led by Jana’e Johnson and Sarah O’Neal. The young writers are producing a new anthology to be published by Nomadic Press in June. This project is also providing a paid youth internship funded by the City of Oakland’s Youth Advisory Council.
During Oakland Unified’s Spring Break, we offer a week-long children’s book camp for 3rd and 4th graders. Led by Oakland author Tiffany Golden, each participant will write an original story book which will be illustrated by professional artists. The books will be published by the end of the school year.
If you are interested in having your child participate, go to Chapter 510’s website to sign up.
How do these children develop their ideas for their stories?
Students are given the time and space to write. Our curriculum includes storyboarding, field trips, theatre and meeting other children’s authors.
Is Chapter 510 partnering with anyone in 2018?
The second annual Write All Day is an Epic writing activity for the entire student body of Acorn Woodland Elementary. This year the Oakland A’s will be joining the wild and wooly journey as poems are written collaboratively passed from classroom to classroom. Stomper will be cheering the young writers to the finish line.
We also are partnering with Youth Opportunity Scholarships Program to offer as many as 40 scholarships to the ninth graders we tutor at MetWest High School. Each ninth grader will apply for a camp or summer activity. We assist the students with the research and application process. Our model is to provide mentoring and tutoring to these 9th graders throughout their high school years. Last year 100% of our seniors were admitted to four year colleges and universities. Many credit these summer scholarships for keeping them on track and inspiring new experiences.
What are your goals for 2018?
We are increasing field trips to Oakland elementary schools. Last year we offered eight and this year: 24. Last year we piloted field trips with Acorn Elementary and we are expanding to Allendale and Hoover.
